"A green roof was a component of a $59 million redevelopment project at AMA Plaza.  Upon learning about the compelling flexibility of the system – primarily the fact that it is lightweight and can utilize a variety of plant choices -  Omni Ecosystems designers engineered a unique system specific to our roof and which could withstand the extreme environment, including wind, of a location 700 feet above the ground on the 52nd floor of the building. Over two years later, and after a harsh winter, the performance of the green roof system has exceeded our very high expectations."

AMA Plaza is a 52-story commercial tower located in downtown Chicago. The building, designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, has been declared a Chicago Landmark and has been inducted into the National Register of Historic Places. Situated on the Chicago River, the building has been home to the offices of such companies as IBM and Jenner & Block. As part of a commitment towards LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance, building ownership has sought to update the structure to meet accredited standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility. The green roof helps mitigate the urban heat island effect and stormwater runoff, among other environmental benefits.

In 2012, Omni Ecosystems provided a fully-planted, 5-inch-deep tray system for a 6,400-square-foot sedum green roof. In the extreme environment of skyscraper rooftops, wind, scour, and dryness stand as obstacles to the health of plants. Accordingly, the irrigation system, unique to Omni Ecosystems green roof trays, helps ensure plant success and vitality in such harsh conditions. An automatic control station equipped with wind and rain sensors regulates watering time and duration for on-going health and stability of the plants
